Assessment and a shared plan
You can start with a family doctor, obstetrician, psychiatrist or psychologist. Assessment includes discussing symptoms, how long they have lasted, safety, sleep, support and previous mental health conditions.
Do not stop or change prescribed medication on your own. During pregnancy or breastfeeding, discuss the benefits and risks of each option with a professional.
What treatment may include
If the first approach does not help enough or causes side effects, seek a review. It does not mean that help will not work.
- Psychological therapy, including cognitive behavioural therapy.
- Medication when appropriate and prescribed by a doctor.
- A combination of therapy and medication.
- More intensive or specialist perinatal care for severe symptoms.
- Practical support, rest and involvement of loved ones as part of the plan.
